I worked with NM for several years while I was employed by Springfield City Schools, but wasn’t aware of the concept of Montessori. It wasn’t until I met a woman whose grandson is at NM and we started talking. I told her how much trouble Kyle was having at the public school he was attending. She told me about the Jon Peterson Scholarship and how much it was helping her grandson who is autistic. I made an appointment with Nancy for my daughter and son-in-law to go thru NM and we were very impressed. At that time I knew it would be the right place for Kyle.

We are so happy that he is here. The difference in Kyle after just a couple of weeks here is amazing. Last week, Nancy asked me to work with Kyle to tie his own shoes. I told her his mother has been, but I wouldn’t be much help since I am left handed. As we walked out that night Nancy told Kyle to practice and that he is very smart and he can do it. We got in the car and he said he was going to practice tying his shoes. I suggested he take them off and practice in his lap and if he could do that he would be able to tie them on his feet. He thought that was a good idea. So, I heard him in the back seat and this is the conversation he had with himself: “Ok Kyle, you can do this. Get the first loop. Ok Kyle, now get the second one. Now Kyle this is the hard part. Take a deep breath. You can do this. Ok Kyle, put the loop thru the hole.” Then I heard him yell, “Grandma, I did it! I tied my own shoes! I did it all on my own! I have been trying for years to learn how to do this, and I finally did it!” I told him how proud of him I was. He practiced all the way home. First on the one shoe and then on the other, just to make sure he could do it. He was excited to show his Mom and Dad.

For us, it’s the success he is making here at NM. He looks forward to school each day, because he doesn’t even know he is in school. Last year it was a daily struggled to get him up and ready for school. He hated it so much. At NM he is encouraged to do more and he does. He has made more progress here in just a few weeks, instead of regressing like he did last year. I have so many success stories for him. Every day it is something new he is excited about.
