Welcome to the "WINGS"
(High School Program: ages 14+)
The Wings are intensely engaged in the work of preparing for college. The school is proud to report that our students have exceeded the statewide averages in passing rates for both the proficient and honors standards.
We offer our high school students programs that continue to foster independent learning and flexible course plans in contrast to the more rigid traditional structure offered in the area high schools. Acknowledging the adolescent need for greater autonomy, we place students in decision-making situations that minimize rote learning and encourage independence. Our academic program is designed to challenge students to work responsibly and perform well on standardized tests.
Early adolescence is a pivotal time in every person's life, a crucial time for students to find experiences at which they can succeed. It is important too that they engage in community service work so they can have a chance to develop a personal vision and acquire a broader view of their place in society.
History. Our High School program was designed six years ago when some of our Falcon students, feeling frustrated with the restrictions imposed by the traditional structure, asked to extend their individualized program of study through their high school years.
Options. Over the years, our students have used Nightingale Montessori's more flexible course design in a variety of ways depending on their independent needs, interests, and educational goals:
- Students can accomplish course objectives and assignments at their own pace. This gives them the option of participating in more courses throughout the years than the traditional schedule will allow.
- Some eighth-grade students enrolled in Nightingale Montessori receive early high school credit. Sometimes they choose to enroll at Catholic Central High School for additional courses.
- Many Nightingale Montessori students entering high school have thus already accumulated more that the required number of credits. These students have the option of participating in the State of Ohio Post Secondary Option Program. This program allows students to take college credits and receive both high school and college credit for the course. When students participate in this college program using Nightingale Montessori as sponsor, the additional flexibility enables them to accumulate credits faster and makes it easier for them to accommodate the demands of both schedules. (The program is attractive both to the universities to which the students apply upon graduating, as well as to the students who can prove to themselves their ability to achieve academic success at an institution of higher learning.)
- Once students are in the eleventh and twelfth grades, they can choose to participate full time in the Post Secondary Option Program or to divide their time between the college program and Nightingale Montessori.
